The redevelopment of the Weeronga retirement village in Willagee is underway with the demolition of some older-style independent living units and the start of construction on a $19.5 million apartment complex.
Sales of the 36-apartments in the complex are also due to start, marking the first stage in the redevelopment of Weeronga, the largest of Alchera Living’s four retirement villages in the City of Melville.
Alchera Living, a not-for-profit organisation, has appointed construction company Pindan to build the four-storey complex, which will also have a basement carpark.
The apartments will be sold by Henry Vu, Executive for Health and Lifestyle at Colliers International, who said local buyers were expected to be a strong contingent.
“Willagee is an established residential area with a high level of amenity,” Mr Vu said.
“We expect the new apartments to attract downsizers looking for well-appointed homes that offer the security and additional amenities of this well located village.”
Weeronga opened in 1975 and is part of a walkable community in the centre of Willagee, which includes an IGA supermarket, two medical centres, cafes, a library, a post office and public open spaces.
The sales campaign starts in April for the 12 three-bedroom apartments and 24 two-bedroom apartments and construction is expected to finish in March 2019.
Mr Vu said the apartments would be next to Winnacott Reserve and with sizes from 99sqm to 120sqm, they would be significantly larger than most non-retirement living apartments.
The vertical accommodation model adopted at Weeronga is also expected to be adopted for new villages and the redevelopment of older sites.
“The scarcity of large land parcels in Perth’s inner metropolitan locations and the growing appeal for apartment living, means broad acre retirement villages will become harder to establish,” Mr Vu said.
“At the same time, demand for retirement living is expected to increase as WA’s population ages.”
The new apartments were designed by national firm Peter Hunt Architect and have a range of floor plans and large balconies. Alchera Living is also building a new gym and an indoor heated swimming pool at Weeronga.
